Sasthamcotta Sub Division

          Sasthamcotta Sub Division is a newly created Sub Division that started its function on 18.02.2021 vide G.O (Rt) No.32/2021 dtd 10.02.2021.  This Sub Division includes the areas of Sasthamcotta, Sooranadu, East Kallada, Kundara, and Puthoor Police stations.  Sasthamcotta Lake, the largest Fresh Water Lake in Kerala, is situated in Sasthamcotta Sub Division.   NH 744 and NH 183( Kollam-Theni) Highways, Kollam-Schencottai, and Thiruvananthapuram - Kayamkulam Railway lines are passing through the Sub Division limits. The emergent Tourism Centre Munroe Island is situated within the limit of East Kallada Police Station. Two main rivers Kallada River and Pallikkal River are flowing through this Sub Division. The famous Sooranadu Viplavam in which a Sub Inspector and 3 Policemen were murdered by Communist activists while discharging their duty at Pathirickal in Sooranadu Village subsequently led to the opening of Sooranadu Police Station. Sub Division is famous for its illustrious Kallada Boat Race in the Kallada River flowing through the limits of East Kallada and Sasthamcotta Police station. The one and only Duryodhana temple in South India, the Poruvazhy Peruviruthi Malanada Temple, which is famous for its Malakkuda Mahotlsavam is situated within the limits of Sooranadu Police Station. The historical Kundara Proclamation was made by Velu Thambi Dalawa, the Prime Minister/Diwan (Dalava) to King Balarama Varma of Travancore made in January 1809. In the year 2007, the then Education Minister of Kerala, Shri. M A Baby, unveiled the 'Kundara Vilambaram' Memorial at Ellampalloor, in Kundara PS limit.

                     Kundara was once the industrial hub of Southern Kerala, which was the home to prominent industrial companies including Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company, The Aluminium Industries Limited, Kundara (commonly known as ALIND), The Kerala Ceramics Limited, and the Lakshmi Starch company, but many of these companies have closed down or turned into sick industries. Kundara is attempting to revive this industrial tradition and glory of a bygone era now by developing Technopark Kollam and The Kerala Ceramics Limited. Birthplace of famous Malayalam Writer Sooranadu Kunjan Pillai in this Sub Division. Sub Division shares its border with Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha Districts.
