Kollam Rural

       Kollam Rural Police District was formed as per the Government Order No 32/2011/Home Dated 05.02.2011 and came into force on 28th February 2011. This Police District was formed by bifurcating Kollam District into Kollam City Police and Kollam Rural Police. This Police District is blessed with marvelous geographical features and important historical events. The famous Maha Ganapathy Temple is situated near the District Police Office Kollam Rural. It is an important place of attraction for the pilgrims and devotees round the year. Kottarakkara Thamburan, the founder of the World Famous Classical Art Kathakali is the proud of this District. The remarkable personalities like Shri. Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair, Shri. Kudavatoor Murali who contributed a lot to the film industry, were born and lived in this district.

                The Muzafir building commonly Known as Travelers Bungalow hosted the Father of our Nation Mahatma Gandhi in 1930s and he lead a protest march against menace of prohibition of the down trodden people to enter into the temple premises, from this Muzafir Building to Thrikkanamangal Shree Krishna Swamy Temple and declared that there will not be any prohibition to the Harijans to enter into the temple premises and offer their prayers. It is an important milestone in the History of India. The famous Kundara Proclamation by Veluthamby Dhalava was at Kundara in this Police District. The largest fresh water lake in Kerala, situated at Sasthamcotta is another landmark in this District.

            At the east there is the Mount Sahya covered with beautiful forest area and profound valleys. The valleys are marked with paddy fields, small streams, lakes, up hills, and rivers. The eastern region is remarkable for its agriculture sector. One of the oldest railway lines in India is passing through this Police District that is the Kollam- Egmore- Madurai line. The train journey through this Railway line is most interesting and provides ever memorable experiences when it passes through the 13 Kannara Bridge, different tunnels and the beautiful forest area at the foot of the Mount Sahya. The temples of Lord Ayyappa situated at Achancovil, Aryankavu and Kulathupuzha are important pilgrim centers during the Sabarimala Festival Season. During this season a lot of devotees from different states come to the above temples for offering their prayers. The famous Palaruvi & Kumbavurutty Water Falls and Hanging Bridge at Punalur are famous tourist attractions. The Punalur Papper Mill is one of the oldest industries in India and established during the 19th Century. The Thenmala Dam built across the river Kallada and the Hydro Electric Project associated with it are other centers of attraction for tourists. The Eco Tourism Project, the Butterfly Park and the Deer Park connected with a boating in the Thenmala Dam are tranquilizing experience for tourists and nature loving people.

            A lot of Educational Institutions including Professional Colleges and Technical Institute are functioning within the jurisdiction of this Police District. Some of the above educational institutions were functioning for more than a century. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra and Farming System Research Station at Sadananda Puram, Kottarakkara contribute a lot to the agriculture development in this district. The Extension Training Center&rsquos at Thrikkannamangal and Vettikkavala provided training for the farmers, agriculturists and women folk who are engaged in handicrafts, poultry and different self-employment schemes and small scale industries. This District is famous for its communal harmony. The Mosque at Pathady and the Orthdox Christian Church at Kundara are also famous pilgrim centers in this Police District.

            The National High Way No 744 from Kollam to Thirumangalam is passing through this Police District and Crosses with State High Way(MC Road) from Thiruvananthapuram to Angamali at Kottarakkara Pulamon Junction.
