Punalur Sub Division

Punalur Sub Division was formed on 15.06.1984 as per GO(RT)No.1543/84/Home Dtd.17.05.1984. Head quarter of Punalur Sub-division is at Punalur town near Railway Station. Punalur Sub Division now consists of 7 Police stations namely Punalur, Pathanapuram, Anchal, Yeroor, Thenmala, Kulathupuzha and Achankovil Police station  and one outpost at Aryankavu. Achankovil and  Thenmala are border Police stations which shares their border with TamilNadu. 
Punalur is landmarked with famous Hanging Bridge constructed on 1877 over Kallada River. At the east there is the &ldquoMount Sahya&rdquo covered with beautiful forest area and profound valleys. The valleys are marked with paddy fields, small streams, lakes, up hills, and rivers. The eastern region is remarkable for its agriculture sector. One of the oldest railway lines in India is passing through this sub division, that is the Kollam- Egmore- Madurai line. The train journey through this Railway line is most interesting and provides ever memorable experiences when it passes through &ldquothe 13 Kannara Bridge&rdquo, different tunnels and the beautiful forest area at the foot of the &ldquoMount Sahya&rdquo. The temples of Lord Ayyappa situated at Achancovil, Aryankavu and Kulathupuzha are important pilgrim centers during the Sabarimala Festival Season. During this season a lot of devotees from different states come to the above temples for offering their prayers. The famous &rdquoPalaruvi & Kumbavurutty Water Falls and Hanging Bridge at Punalur&rdquo are famous tourist attractions. The Punalur Papper Mill is one of the oldest industries in India and established during the 19th Century. 
The Thenmala Dam built across the river Kallada and the Hydro Electric Project associated with it, are other centers of attraction for tourists. The Eco Tourism Project, the Butterfly Park and the Deer Park connected with a boating in the Thenmala Dam are tranquilizing experience for tourists and nature loving people. Majority of the people in this sub division depend on agriculture sector for their lively hood. The rehabilitation plantation at Kulathupuzha, the teak plantation at Edamon, Thenmala are attracted by nature loving people. Lion share of this sub division is covered with beautiful forest having unique bio diversity. A lot of Ayurvedic shrubs and rare species of animals and plants can be found in this forest. Hence it has a remarkable place in the geological map. This sub division shares its border with Tamilnadu and there is a border check post at Aryankavu with busy transportation of goods between Kerala and Tamilnadu. The National High Way No 744 from Kollam to Thirumangalam and Hill Highway are passing through this Sub Division.
